STEVEN Foulds never imagined the physical strength he'd built up over many years could be stripped away in the blink of an eye.

The fit security guard was on the verge of a professional boxing career when he was confronted by a group of six men outside a Sunbury pub at the end of his shift on August 29, 2009.

He was punched by a man wearing knuckle-dusters, pushed up against a wall by others, and one of his eyes was gouged.

The attack left Mr Foulds, now 26, with five damaged vertebrae, a fractured sinus cavity, and a temporary brain injury.

"Mentally, it was very stressful, and physically. I had put up this high standard and it had been taken from me through no fault of my own," Mr Foulds said.

But he said it was the lasting effects of being a victim of crime that prompted him to help others in Preston.

Mr Foulds said that while he was working on treating his own anxiety and depression, he discovered the benefits of exercise to help people with mental illness and sleeplessness.

When he was asked to teach Brazilian jiu jitsu at Preston's Hangar 4 Combat Sports Centre, he jumped at the chance. Now he runs his own personal training business at the site, endeavouring to help other victims of crime.

"(Exercise) gives them an opportunity to get rid of stresses in a positive way," Mr Foulds said.
